In today’s world, email, texting, and social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace have taken over where actual communication between friends left off. Workdays have lengthened and have reached their tentacles into evenings and weekends. Soccer practice, Girl Scouts, and dance lessons fill much of the rest of the available time for parents. Opportunities for getting together with friends seem to dwindle over time as other priorities consume the remaining hours in the day. Without an event like a wedding or a funeral to draw people together, it’s easy to go weeks or even months without seeing friends.
The cure for this modern disease is a good old-fashioned party! You don’t need to have an excuse to have a party. The party itself is the excuse to see friends.
To make the party worth RSVP’ing about, try a themed party. Throwing a party based on a theme can be fun and can engage all of your guests in the process. Themed parties can range from dressing up as your favorite celebrity to recreating a Hawaiian luau to throwing a 50’s sock hop.
If there is a special event coming up, you can tie the theme of the party into that. For example, if the Superbowl is around the corner, you can have a football themed party and have everyone wear the jersey of their favorite player. If the anniversary of a classic movie is coming up, you can decorate the party venue in the time period and place of the movie.
When sending invitations to your themed party, be sure to include friends who you haven’t seen in a while. Even if you think they will not be able to attend, extending an invitation will make them feel included and will keep you on their mind the next time they throw a get together. The invitations themselves can be styled to match the party theme. Many online party supply retailers carry pre-made themed party invitations or you can make your own. The invitation should not only mention the basics of time and place, but also be clear about the theme and what is expected of guests such as whether they should dress up and how.
Decorate your themed party with items that reflect the theme. A 50’s sock hop, for example, could have old pictures of the host and guests displayed and 45’s hanging on the wall. Consider the food and beverages you will serve at the party as well. They should also fit in with the theme. Nachos and hot dogs at a Super Bowl party, chili and cornbread at a child’s cowboy party, or a devilish foaming brew at a Halloween party all stay within the theme.
Throwing a themed party is a great way to reconnect with friends and have a blast at the same time. Your friends will remember your themed party for a long time and you may inspire them to throw one of their own.
