When you think of thong underwear, it is likely that you first think of women’s clothing. Women’s thongs have been popular in North America for the past decade, spurred by television shows like Baywatch. Thongs have been a staple in South America, especially Brazil, for much longer. Going back even farther than that, the thong is simply a continuation of the loin cloth, first worn by native tribesmen to cover their genitalia thousands of years ago.
In the past several years, the concept of the male thong has been gaining in popularity. On European beaches, men often wear thong bathing suits. As an undergarment, the thong is used both for practical and titillating reasons. A thong can be worn under even the sheerest garments and will not produce a panty line, making it popular in high fashion. As a sensuous garment, thongs are still popular attire for male exotic dancers, but are becoming more mainstream as a bedroom garment.
Male thongs come in many different fabrics, styles and colors. There are two main styles of thong- the traditional one that sports a thin strip of material at the back and the g-string, which has a string to sit between the buttocks and attach to the front.
If you are buying your first male thong, comfort is the biggest consideration. While many wearers, both men and women, claim that thongs are the most comfortable undergarments, some feel just the opposite and do not like the feeling of fabric between their buttocks. Purchase one thong to start with until you know for certain which group you fall into.
In choosing a fabric for your thong, again, comfort is the key. Natural fabrics, such as cottons, silks, and leather, move with the body and provide better airflow, making for a more comfortable experience. While vinyl is a trendy choice, it may not be appropriate for long wear times. Some thongs include buckles, zippers or other fasteners that may chafe delicate skin if the garment is not well-designed. In general, a plain-fronted thong is your best choice.
Once you have purchased and worn your first thong, you will have a better sense of what features you do and do not like. If you don’t like the string around the sides and back of a g-string, for example, you may wish to try a more traditional style thong. If the thong was hot and uncomfortable, try a different fabric or style.
Caring properly for your thong will ensure that it lasts many years. Care instructions will change depending on the material so check carefully. Thongs should be washed soon after use so that perspiration and soils do not wear down the fabric. Some thongs will be spot clean only but most will contain hand-wash instructions. Never wash your thong in a washing machine as the agitation is hard on the garment. Store your thong flat in a drawer and do not leave bunched up to wrinkle.
The male thong continues to gain popularity in North America. Finding the one that’s right for you takes some time and common sense, but your partner will thank you for it.
