Pulls & Slices

The pull shot is a shot that flies straight left of target and is very closely related to the slice. The sliced pull shot is one that normally starts slightly left of target and then veers out to the right. The main difference between the two is that the pull is more prevalent with the short irons and the slice is more common with the long irons and woods (due to the lack of loft on the longer clubs).

In both cases, the club approaches the ball on an out-to-in swing path but with the club face facing left of target for a pull shot and facing right of target for a sliced shot.

Quite simply, aim is the direction in which the club head faces at set-up, and (assuming a consistent swing path is achieved), is invariably where the ball will finish. The difference between the pull and the slice is that, just before you hit the ball, the club face will be pointing left of target for a pull and right of target for a slice.

Correcting Your Aim

Top amateurs and professionals alike place a great deal of emphasis on the "ball-to-target line," the imaginary line running from the ball to target. For a well-aimed shot, the leading edge of the club face should always be at a right angle to the ball-to-target line.

A popular pre-shot routine is to stand several feet behind the ball, as if lining up a putt, and try to pick out a similar mark on the ground approximately 4 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 m) in. front of the ball and on the ball-to-target line. Then, focus on this mark when setting up, rather than trying to line up on the target somewhere off in the distance. The point about lining up on a mark only a short distance in front of the. ball is that both ball and mark are in your field of view at the same time.
