In my cupboard yesterday, my gaze fell upon an old champagne flute. It was an ordinary champagne flute, a tall narrow glass designed to highlight the rising bubbles of the old bubbly. Ordinary in every respect save one; it was engraved. The name of a husband and wife that I have known for years and years, a date, and the words “Best Man” are etched into the side of the glass. I haven’t actually used the glass for drinking champagne or anything else since the day I received it, but seeing it there on the shelf brought me back to that day.
I remember getting fitted for a tuxedo, chafing at the stiff collar, and admiring the suit in a three way mirror. I remember standing up beside the groom during the ceremony in a rented VFW hall. It wasn’t a high dollar wedding, but it was about two people’s love for each other just the same as the most expensive weddings are.
The date etched into the glass reminds me that it was spring wedding. Spring in New England is mud season and that year was no exception. In my new shoes, purchased for the event and my tuxedo pants, tailored to fall over the shoe tops with just a slight break, I struggled to walk from my car in the muddy parking lot to the front door of the rural VFW hall where the wedding was to be held without getting mud on the pant cuffs. I succeeded, and once inside, I used paper towels to restore the shoes to their brand new shine.
I remember sitting at the wedding party’s table in the same hall after the ceremony for the start of the reception. I saw the engraved glass filled with champagne and knew that it meant I would have to give the toast to the new couple. I didn’t write anything before hand, although I did think about what I’d say when the time came. I don’t recall the exact words, but I remember that it was something simple and classy. Probably something that had been said at similar events a thousand times before, but no one seemed to notice or to mind, and everyone raised their glasses and drank when I finished. There were cheers, calls of “hear, hear” and a single misplaced “encore!”
I remember dancing with my own wife of less than a year later during the reception. She was beautiful and I felt like a king dancing with her, even though the reception entertainment consisted of a record player set on a card table and someone to switch the records every now and then.
The gift of the engraved champagne flute was not about giving a piece of glassware to be trotted out when we have champagne. It was about giving all those memories to those who helped make the day special for the wedding couple. And still decades later, I smile at those memories and take the glass down and show my wife. She smiles, either at the same memories or at me being a silly romantic. Either way, her smile is just as pretty as it was that day long ago.

You have been invited to a dinner party. Of course, a nice bottle of wine would be just the ticket for your hosts. But they know wine and you don’t. You don’t want to get them something they won’t like and may never drink. You certainly don’t want to look foolish with something that a connoisseur might frown upon, so what to do?
You visit TheTipsygrape.com and find them a wine-related gift – something special that they probably don’t have, may have never seen, but will surely love and use.
There are corkscrews of every kind, like the rabbit corkscrew which is said to be the industry standard or if your hosts are of the type who like something whimsical, there is the faucet corkscrew. It looks like a faucet and you just turn it on to release the cork! Alternately, you can choose very chic gift sets which contain foil cutter, corkscrew, drip ring, and bottle-stopper. There are a variety of unique and interesting wine racks for 1-6 bottles, and wooden wine stands which can even be engraved with the hosts’ name.
A nice selection of wine-related art is available, lovely prints, funny wall plaques and posters. My favorite says “Men are like fine wine. They start out like grapes. It’s our job to stomp them until they mature into something you would like to have dinner with.”
Readers might enjoy a wine-related book, which range from the light-hearted, but informational “Wine for Dummies” to an inspirational story, “Harvesting the Dream” about an immigrant family who developed a large and successful winery, The Sutter Home winery.
Of course, there are always wine glasses and wine flutes which can be engraved with whatever you like. No minimum required. It might be a his and hers set with their names, choose existing designs like the humorous “Mommy’s Juice” or “Dave’s Medicine.” You can use your own ideas to delight your friends.
Christmas cannot be forgotten. Be sure to check out the available Christmas wine products. There are always parties at Christmas for which you need a special gift. If you know wine and are very comfortable choosing and giving wine as a gift, I salute you. But you still need to make the wine a special gift with just the right accessory. They will love you for taking the time to make your gift special, perhaps with a special gift tag with real “jingle bells”. As we all know, presentation is everything.
An entire world of products exists for the wine lover; T-shirts, aprons, candles, magnets, chillers, on and on. From elegance to humor, there is something for everyone. Where do you find all of this? Well, I find it at a site called TheTipsyGrape.com. I guarantee that at TheTipsyGrape.com you can find the right gift at the right price for any wine-lover, whether they are “wine-snobs” or just plain folks who love wine. I warn you, you will probably find something, unique and special, that you cannot resist buying for yourself if you have a tender spot for wine, and who doesn’t?
