Lottery

In today’s mobile society, it is important to maintain every convenience possible and this includes being able to play your favorite games of chance. There are many online gaming websites that will allow you to play every game from poker to bingo from any location with an internet connection, and now the lottery is giving individuals the same opportunity as the rest of the online gaming community. It is important to remember that while the lottery is still considered a game of chance, it is one of the few that will actually benefit your municipality.

This fact is why many individuals prefer to play the lottery over any other game of chance because of the opportunity to promote growth and benefit the many projects that need to be completed where you live. Add that benefit to the simple rules and quick pace of some lottery games and you have a perfect combination of excitement, benefits and ease of use that some just cannot resist. When it comes to playing the lottery, there are two major categories; the “scratch off” ticket, and the “pick your numbers” ticket. Both of these can be found online and some games even have been designed to offer better odds online as opposed to playing in the more traditional setting.

If you want to take advantage of the online lottery it is important to ensure that your online lottery website is recognized by your local lottery commission. This will ensure that your play will be as secure as humanly possible and you will have a guarantee that all your winnings will be paid within a reasonable amount of time. Once you find your online lottery website, all that is left to do is choose your game and play.

The online lottery community has extended many advantages to their players, such as increased odds on some of the most popular games and exclusive games not offered in the traditional lottery setting. This is in addition to all of the games that are offered in a more traditional setting, and it is designed to make the online lottery more enjoyable to all who wish to take advantage of this convenience. There are few that will argue that the online gaming community is gaining in popularity, however, it is important to remember that the lottery will always have a local connection. This is because lotteries are generally set in place to help the community or region where they are played. This will allow you to enjoy playing your games of chance while helping certain organizations in your community, such as the educational system.

If you would like to try the world of online lotteries, there are very few things to consider because of the way that this type of game is designed. Once you find a lottery website that is recognized by your lottery commission, it is just a matter of choosing your game and playing. This type of forum offers the player many more benefits than the more traditional version and there are few who can argue that the advantages cannot be beat. If you want one of the truly convenient ways to play the lottery then you will want to try the online lottery in your area.

What You Need to Know about Wireless Adapters

Wireless adapters are becoming more and more popular for laptops and home personal computers. These adapters are essential for a laptop to work online. These adapters include small transmitters or receivers that will let your laptop send and receive signals, or radio signals. Most wireless adapters are known as Wi-Fi adapters and there are many types out there with different qualities and pricing.

One type of wireless adapter works through the USB port. These adapters are typically small and connect to the laptop through the USB port. These adapters can be switched between laptops or other personal computers. The wireless adapters are easy to install and allow you to adjust the location of the adapters to improve the quality of the signal and reception.

If you do not have a USB port available, you can also install a wireless card. When you are installing internal network adapters, make sure you turn off the power to the computer and unplug the cord. Also be careful of what might drop into the case, such as screws. In most cases you do not actually have to turn off the computer, but may need to reboot to finish the installation of the wireless card.

Wireless adapters have two different types of operation, which are infrastructure and ad dot hoc. Once you install these cards you connect the adapters to the operating systems. Software such as Windows recognizes the new hardware and will make a prompt for you to insert or find the appropriate drivers. Next your computer has a system stored that will configure the card and will have you go through a step by step process that will automatically detect your access point and the channel that it is using.

Another type of wireless adapter is for sound. This adapter is a “must-have” if you use things like wireless speakers for your sound system or computer. Most of these adapters are problem free and you don’t have the clutter that you normally would with regular cables and speakers. These adapters can be powered by electricity by plugging them into your electrical outlets or by the audio device that you are using. Some of these adapters are even used in the form of Bluetooth. The quality and prices of these devices will vary by the type of technology they use to transmit their signals.

The standard wireless adapter is powered by electricity. You simply plug in the adapter directly into the electrical outlet. This adapter comes in a variety of volts, the majority being the nine-volt models. Once you plug in the wireless adapters you will normally see a symbol on your screen for the device and indication that the adapter is turned on. Standard adapters are usually designed for specific brands and models of wireless speakers.

The Bluetooth adapter utilizes the Bluetooth technology to transmit its signals. This could be from your mp3 or another device that will allow Bluetooth technology. This speaker adapter rarely has any audio interference and will give you a better sound quality because the adapter is directly connected to the player you use for your sound.

How to Locate a Missing Deadbeat Dad

Deadbeat Dad

It is estimated that half of all marriages in the United States will end in divorce. This is a sad statistic, but even sadder when you consider that the majority of these broken marriages involve a child or several children. In most divorce cases involving children, a judge will determine the custody parameters of each parent, including any child support that a parent is ordered to pay. In the majority of child custody cases, the children’s main caretaker will be the mother, while the father will be ordered to pay a predetermined amount of child support each month.

While child support is usually based on a parent’s income and ability to pay at the time of the custody hearing, many of these dads make the child support payments sporadically or choose not to pay the child support at all. The reasons they have for not fulfilling their parental obligations run the gamut, from claiming that the child support payments are unaffordable, to not agreeing with how their former spouse is spending the child support payment money and anything and everything in between. Regardless, a parent that is ordered to pay child support cannot just decide to adjust the payments to a level that suits them or to stop the payments completely. If the parent feels the payments are unreasonable or that the other parent is being negligent, there is a legal process that can be followed to make adjustments to the child support. Unfortunately, many parents decide to take matters into their own hands. And because the majority of parents that are ordered to pay child support are the fathers as opposed to the mothers, the term, “deadbeat dad” has become a popular catchphrase today.

The term, “deadbeat dad” simply refers to any dad that is severely behind on making child support payments. Deadbeat dads can be a source of much frustration and anxiety for their former spouses and children. This is especially true if the parent in question has moved or otherwise made his whereabouts unknown. Many ex-partners of deadbeat dads feel like there is nothing they can do in this situation, but that is not the case. There are some positive steps you can take for your own sake and for the sake of your children.

If you do not know the whereabouts of the father of your child or children, finding out where he is would be the first step in attempting to recover lost child support. There are several websites that offer deadbeat dad location services for free. These sites are obviously limited in the amount of information they may return and they may not always have current and / or accurate information. Another way to track down a deadbeat dad is to hire a private investigator. While this will cost you some money up front, the pay off for finding the deadbeat dad in question could be tremendous, so do not rule this option out. Many private investigation firms offer locate investigations in which deadbeat dads can be found.

Arizona State

Arizona Little is known of the earliest indigenous cultures in Arizona, but they probably lived in the region as early as 25,000 B.C. A later culture, the Hohokam (A.D. 500-1450), were pit dwellers who constructed extensive irrigation systems. The Pueblo flourished in Arizona between the 11th and 14th cent. and built many of the elaborate cliff dwellings that still stand. The Apache and Navajo came to the area in c.1300 from Canada.
Spanish Exploration and Mexican Control

Probably the first Spanish explorer to enter Arizona (c.1536) was Cabeza de Vaca. Franciscan friar Marcos de Niza reached the state in 1539; he was followed by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, who led an expedition from Mexico in 1540 in search of the seven legendary cities of gold, reaching as far as the Grand Canyon. Despite extensive exploration, the region was neglected by the Spanish in favor of the more fruitful area of New Mexico. Father Eusebio Kino, a Jesuit, founded the missions of Guevavi (1692) and Tumacacori (1696), near Nogales, and San Xavier del Bac (1700), near Tucson. The Spanish Empire, however, expelled the Jesuits in 1767, and those in Arizona subsequently lost their control over the indigenous people.

The Arizona region came under Mexican control following the Mexican war of independence from Spain (1810-21). In the early 1800s, U.S. mountain men, trappers and traders such as Kit Carson, trapped beaver in the area, but otherwise there were few settlers.
U.S. Acquisition and the Discovery of Minerals

In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848), ending the Mexican War (1846-48), Mexico relinquished control of the area N of the Gila River to the United States. This area became part of the U.S. Territory of New Mexico in 1850. The United States, wishing to build a railroad through the area S of the Gila River, bought the area between the river and the S boundary of Arizona from Mexico in the Gadsden Purchase (1853).

Arizona’s minerals, valued even by prehistoric miners, attracted most of the early explorers, and although the area remained a relatively obscure section of the Territory of New Mexico, mining continued sporadically. Small numbers of prospectors, crossing Arizona to join the California gold rush (1849), found gold, silver, and a neglected metal copper.

In 1861, at the outbreak of the Civil War, conventions held at Tucson and Mesilla declared the area part of the Confederacy. In the only engagement fought in the Arizona area, a small group of Confederate pickets held off Union cavalry NW of Tucson in the skirmish known as the battle of Picacho Pass.
Territorial Status and Statehood

In 1863, Arizona was organized as a separate territory, with its first, temporary capital at Fort Whipple. Prescott became the capital in 1865. Charles D. Poston, who had worked to achieve Arizona’s new status, was elected as the territory’s first delegate to the U.S. Congress. The capital was moved to Tucson in 1867, back to Prescott in 1877, and finally to Phoenix in 1889.

The region had been held precariously by U.S. soldiers during the intermittent warfare (1861-86) with the Apaches, who were led by Cochise and later Geronimo. General George Crook waged a successful campaign against the Apaches in 1882-85, and in 1886 Geronimo finally surrendered to federal troops. When Confederate troops were routed and Union soldiers went east to fight in the Civil War, settlement was abandoned. It was resumed after the war and encouraged by the Homestead Act (1862), the Desert Land Act (1877), and the Carey Land Act (1894)… all of which turned land over to settlers and required them to develop it.

In the 1870s mining flourished, and by the following decade the Copper Queen Company at Bisbee was exploiting one of the area’s largest copper deposits. In 1877 silver was discovered at Tombstone, setting off a boom that drew throngs of prospectors to Arizona but lasted less than 10 years. Tombstone also became famous for its lawlessness; Wyatt Earp and his brothers gained their reputations during the famous gunfight (1881) at the O. K. Corral. By 1880 the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads both extended into Arizona. Ranching began to thrive and sheep raising grew from solely a Navajo occupation to a major enterprise among white settlers. After 1897, the U.S. Forestry Bureau issued grazing permits to protect public land from depletion.

In 1912, Arizona, still a frontier territory, attained statehood. Its constitution created a storm, with such "radical" political features as initiative, referendum, and judicial recall. Only after recall had been deleted did President Taft sign the statehood bill. Once admitted to the Union, Arizona restored the recall provision.

How to Break a Dog’s Habit of Pulling on the Leash During a Walk

Dog’s Leash

Walking your dog can be one of the many pleasures of having a canine friend. However, when your dog pulls on the leash and creates a power struggle during your walks, this pleasant time can turn into something not so pleasant. Not to worry, there are ways you can stop your dog from continuing this annoying habit.

If your dog is pulling on the leash, the first thing you need to do is remind yourself that it takes two to pull. In other words, you are pulling just as much as your dog is pulling! You must change the way you think about the leash. A dog’s leash can be compared to the seat belt in a car. A seat belt is a safety device, just as a leash is used to keep your pet safe. You do not drive your car with the seat belt, and you should not attempt to “drive” your dog with the dog leash.

The next thing you need to do is to stop rewarding your dog’s habit of pulling on the leash by continuing to walk. As soon as your dog begins to put tension on the leash, you should stop moving immediately. Your dog is pulling on the leash because he wants to get somewhere quickly and if you continue to allow forward movement, you are simply rewarding his pulling behavior. This may be a frustrating solution at first because you will feel like you are doing more standing than walking, but your dog will quickly learn that putting tension on the leash does not equate to getting some place quickly. Your dog will make the connection that pulling on the leash means stopping and waiting.

When your dog pulls on the leash and you stop, your dog will inevitably turn and look at you to see what has happened. At this point, you should praise your dog for this attention and encourage your dog to return to a position that is next to you. You may even find it necessary to take a few steps backwards to entice your dog to follow you. Once the dog is in the correct position next to your leg, offer a reward such as food and praise or perhaps a much loved toy. If your dog returns to putting tension on the leash, stop again immediately and repeat the process. Again, this may be a frustrating repetition of steps when you are first attempting to break this habit, but your dog will quickly learn that pulling the leash does not equal movement; while walking in the correct position garners him praise and positive attention.

Consistency is key, so you must be resolute in breaking your dog’s leash pulling habit. Do not give up or give in and allow your dog to pull or you will simply undo any hard work you have done in attempt to break the leash pulling habit. If you find it hard to not break this habit for yourself, you can consider using a waist leash so you can go hands free.

Traveling with Dogs

Traveling with Dogs

If you have a dog, and you travel, you know what a chore putting the two together can be. Highly trained dogs are great, coming when they are called, sitting when they are told, and staying quiet. Unfortunately, most of us have dogs that are not highly trained, that bark at the wrong time, run away if left unleashed, and behave badly at exactly the wrong time. How can you get one of these little monsters from point A to point B? That depends on how far you have to travel and what you are comfortable with.

Many of us take road trips at least once a year. Bringing the family dog is an option, especially if you cannot get somebody to babysit. How far you can go and how comfortably depends on the size and temperament of the dog, as well as the size of your automobile. Smaller or medium sized dogs are pretty easy to travel with in almost any car. If the dog is calm, he can sit on somebody’s lap, in an empty seat, or in the back if the only people in the car are in the front. If he is rambunctious, a carrier is the best way to go. SUVs are the best automobile to use when driving with a dog. The large covered area in the back provides the dog with enough room to move around, stretch out, and lay down while you drive. Make sure to stop every now and again to give the dog a chance to relieve himself, or you might not like the way your car smells.

Another option is air travel. Traveling with dogs on a plane is a bit trickier. Smaller dogs give you more options. On almost any airline, a dog can be shipped as cargo. The dog is loaded into an appropriate sized carrier and is carried in the luggage compartment of the plane. This can be traumatic to your dog. You may want to consider talking to a veterinarian about getting a mild sedative to help the dog sleep through the trip. On some airlines, a small dog with a good temperament can be carried in the cabin. The dog must be carried in a duffel bag style carrier. The carrier has openings for air to get in, and zips up like a duffel bag. The dog can be put in easily, and carried over the shoulder. Airlines that allow this method of pet travel use weight as a limitation, meaning that it is only available for the smallest breeds of dog.

Traveling with dogs can be a harrowing experience. Whether driving or flying, the trip can cause enormous amounts of stress for you and your dog. Be sure to allow plenty of time to prepare, no matter what method of traveling you are using. Think about what the trip will involve, and over-plan to make sure that all contingencies are accounted for. The last thing you need is a dog that needs something you did not think to bring with you. That has the potential to make a bad situation worse.

Green Cars and the Repair Bill

What Does It Cost to Repair an Electric Vehicle

You may have seen new commercials on television highlighting the advantages and the cost effectiveness of “green” vehicles, but there are few that will mention the average cost of repairs. This is a vital piece of the puzzle when it comes to the purchase of any new vehicle, and one of the major selling points of any major purchase. In the race to “go green” some individuals forget this major aspect to purchasing any vehicle and where much of the research comes in that needs to be done before even stepping foot into a dealership.

One of the best ways to find out this information is by going online. The web is ever increasing in popularity when it comes to discovering information about anything you can imagine and environmentally friendly cars are not immune to this type of research. There are many electric vehicles websites that are available to the general public and they hold a wealth of information on every aspect of this new technology. While it is true that the electric car has been around for a few decades, it has only recently been available to the mass market and is still very new in mainstream society.

When it comes to environmentally friendly vehicles there are really two major options to choose from; the hybrids and electric vehicles or an EV. The most popular with mainstream consumers and car manufacturers are the hybrid vehicles. This type of vehicle will still allow you to treat your vehicle the same way as you always have, but does get better fuel mileage than a more traditional gas-only vehicle. There are a few things to consider before setting your sights on one type of environmentally friendly vehicle or another and that is the cost of repairs. This is where your research on an EV website will become the most vital.

Electric car parts are different by definition than a more traditional vehicle and it is important to know the cost of this technology before you purchase your vehicle. While the cost difference may not be enough to steer most away from this technology, having this information prior to purchase will save you from having any unwanted surprises when it comes to the general maintenance of your new vehicle. You will be able to find all of this information and much more on the ever changing trends of this technology on your EV website.

Going green is a great way to do your part to save the world, but it is only good if you can afford it. This is why research is so important when it comes to purchasing this type of vehicle. There are many who own environmentally friendly vehicles and have never been more pleased with a purchase, while others have been blindsided by the repair costs involved. As with any new trend that has the potential to grow instead of fade it is important not only to embrace the new technology, but to go about it in the best way possible. This includes and demands a great deal of research into the different options and costs that are involved, which can be easily found on any EV website. In this age of advancement and technology it is always important to be on the cutting edge, but it is also important to always have all the information you need to make the best decision possible.

A Billboard on the Information Superhighway

A Billboard on the Information Superhighway

The internet has been called “the Information Superhighway” in popular culture. In reality, however, It’s not only a superhighway, but also a complex maze of congested city streets, winding back roads, and dark alleys. Without a good roadmap or the equivalent of a website GPS device, it can be difficult or impossible to find one’s desired destination without getting lost. Search engines are those roadmaps.

Search engines help internet users find whatever it is they are looking for, whether its information, pictures, videos, or music. The major search engines send out software robots called spiders to follow every open link they come across and report back with information about each website and the content that it contains. Using this vast database, the search engines can sift through millions and millions of websites every time a user enters a search term to deliver a list of those websites that it considers most relevant to the user’s search.

Depending upon the text that the user entered in the search field, the list of returned websites can include private blogs, retail websites, hobby websites, or a number of different types of websites that contain information pertaining the searched text. Search engines try to deliver the most relevant web sites first on the list. For businesses, achieving top results for search terms related to their goods and services is a major determining factor in how many potential customers visit their websites each day.

The practice of customizing a website to help it rank well on search engine results pages, is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is achieved, in part, by providing the spiders sent by the major search engines with enough information concerning your website’s focus to convince it that your website is the one that would most interest anyone searching for terms related to your business. Search engines also take into account the number of incoming links to your website from other sites with similar content. In other words, if a number of popular blogs or consumer websites related to fishing or fishing gear link back to a web page that sells a particular line of fishing lures, then each link is considered to be a kind of recommendation about the quality of the website that sells those lures. The number and quality of these third party recommendations also weigh heavily on the search engine’s estimation of a particular website’s relevance for a given search term.

Incoming links from relevant sources and rich content related to the topic are just two of many factors that help determine a website’s search engine ranking. SEO marketers can help website owners increase their position in search engine results and increase the flow of potential customers that visit. SEO experts, in other words, can help give your business a prominent billboard on the information superhighway so that you get noticed.

Things to Consider When Choosing an Online Degree Program

The benefits of having a college degree have been well documented. Not only do college graduates earn over twenty thousand dollars per year more than people who do not have a college degree, but there are other benefits as well. Studies suggest that people who have college degrees also have more money in savings accounts, more personal and professional options, a better quality of life for their children, and make sounder purchasing decisions.

If you have decided to pursue a college degree while working full time, do not fear, it is not necessary to quit your job or reduce your number of working hours. Today, it is easier than ever to earn a college degree online. Probably the most difficult part about earning your degree online will be choosing which online degree program is right for you. As discussed previously, the top three things to consider about online degree programs are: program accreditation, program longevity and reputation, and instructor quality. But, if you would like to do an even more through job in investigating your online degree options, consider the following tips below.

1. Tuition and Fees Financing – Everyone knows that earning a college degree can be an expensive endeavor, whether you choose a brick and mortar college or an online degree program. So if you are considering an online degree program, consider checking into the financing options for the tuition and fees of the program. Some online colleges are eligible to participate in financial aid programs, while others are not. If you are counting on some sort of financial assistance to pay for your online degree, this is definitely something you would want to look into.

2. Satisfied Customers – If possible, it would be very valuable for you to talk to some people who have actually graduated from the online programs you are considering. Perhaps the schools you are looking into have student forums or message boards you could poll for customer satisfaction. You could also search for the name of your school and words like reviews or recommendations in any popular search engine and possibly investigate the experiences of former students this way.

3. Technical Support – Earning an online degree obviously means you will be doing the bulk of your course work using a computer and internet access. If something is not working properly on the end of the online program, there should be technical support available to assist you in fixing the problem.

4. Class Size – While you may think class size may not matter when considering an online degree program, it certainly does. Although you will not have to deal with sitting in a classroom with hundreds of other students, if the class sizes in an online degree program are very large, you will have a limited amount of your instructor’s attention. You want to make sure any questions you have are answered in a timely and complete manner and any guidance you may need is addressed properly. Instructors that are overloaded with students simply do not have the time and energy to properly educate all of their students.

Preparing for Travel with your Small Dog

Travel with your Small Dog

One of the greatest things about small dogs is their portability. With the right carrier, we can take them with us almost anywhere, which is good because our small pets are so adorable we hardly want to be without them. But if you are going to travel and plan to take your small dog with you, there are some things to keep in mind to safely and humanely travel with your small dog.

If your trip will be relatively short, the first thing to keep in mind when traveling with a small dog is their comfort. If the dog is traveling by crate, place a soft blanket inside. Make sure the crate or dog bag is large enough for your pooch so that he or she is not cramped for the duration of the journey. Be sure to place some treasured things from home in the dog’s travel case. A pillow he or she sleeps on and their favorite toy should be placed inside the bag to remind them of home and to give them familiar smells. Bring a lot of little treats to boost your puppy’s spirits during the journey. Talk to him or her frequently and if you can, reach inside and pet him or her as often as you can. During layovers or stops, let your dog out to walk and go to the bathroom. Be sure to clean up after him or her. When you arrive at your destination, give your dog a long walk. After being cooped up all day, it will be a real treat for your small dog to stretch her legs and run free for a bit.

If you are going to be traveling by plane, there are a few extra things to keep in mind if you are traveling with your small dog. If you book your flight online, you may still have to additionally call the airline to book your pet. There is usually a small fee for your pet to join you in the cabin of the plane. Make sure you check with your particular airline by calling them or visiting them for more info specific to their airline. The pet carrier will be counted as carry-on luggage and will need to fit under the seat in front of you. An airline may say that the maximum height allowance is only 9 inches. Your dog also has to be able to stand up, turn around and lie down naturally in the carrier. A soft carrier is ideal for airplane travel. One reason is that you may find one with a height of 11″ high, but it is pliable enough to fit under the seat. Websites like swankpets.com have a wide assortment of soft carriers starting at $59 for your small dog to travel in.

Carefully consider if your pet could endure a really long flight. It may not be practical to expect them to stay under the seat in front of you in a little carrier less than a foot high for hours and hours. In this case, a trusted friend to check on your pet during your absence or kenneling them may be a better option for both you and your dog.

Fatherly Roles

Fatherly Roles

In the early weeks of the new baby’s life especially, a father can share household responsibilities, being sufficiently supportive and perceptive to see what needs to be done and pitching in to do it. By exercising some control over the number of visitors and the time they are allowed to stay, taking over household errands and performing routine tasks, such as getting some meals and cleaning up after them, doing the laundry, and running the vacuum cleaner, he can help provide the serenity and order that will give the family’s home life a semblance of normality in a time of stress. However inexperienced he is at child care, he can learn within a very short time to be skilled at and to enjoy changing, bathing, and comforting the baby, and if not feeding her, performing the important after feeding task of burping.

Though you will find your child reacting to her father differently as the child grows-your eighteen month old, for example, will enjoy roughhousing with Daddy, but when in trouble will very likely turn only to Mommy-the effect of a close, nurturing relationship with a male figure is good for both boys and girls. The popularity of Fred Rogers for nearly twenty years on public television’s Mister Roger’s Neighborhood indicates how enthusiastically children react to caring presence of men in their lives.

Besides lending a hand around the house and accepting some of the responsibility for the care of his child, the new father often takes the traditionally male responsibilities very seriously. He may feel the financial burden of a third member of the family very strongly, especially if the mother’s income has been important and she does not plan to return to work in the near future. And he may envy his wife her opportunity to stay home with the baby as much as she envies his being able to get out every day.

Men who participate as fully as they can in the birth of their babies and who continue to share the responsibilities of home and children, find the rewards great. Their lives take on a new dimension; their marriages are strengthened and become more meaningful. Fathers can "mother" too, and those who choose to accept that responsibility, are today the norm, not the exception. Reports of surveys bulge with statistics. Here are just a few: Eighty-five percent of fathers are present during their wife’s labor; fifty percent during delivery. Ninety-six percent help with baby and child care; eighty percent do not refuse to change diapers.

Parent-Infant Bond

Parent-Infant Bond

Given the opportunity, parents and babies naturally form a strong relationship with each other. This relationship is often called the parent-infant bond. For the parent, this bond is woven of love and responsibility. For the infant, it is his first-and perhaps most important-relationship.

Psychoanalysts have theorized that a first love relationship a baby experiences with a parent sets the stage for all later interpersonal relationships. They contend that if you don’t have this necessary relationship in your formative years, you won’t be able to love as an adult. A number of psychologists and psychiatrists have found support for this view. For example, John Bowlby, a British psychoanalyst, studied children growing up without parents in the first years of life; these children often had problems relating with others and forming bonds later in life. From such studies, psychologists have recognized what parents knew all along-how important sensitive, responsive, and consistent parenting is to the healthy development of a child.

However, it is also important to point out that babies may not have to be with their parents all the time, despite the current emphasis in Lamaze classes and parents magazines on the position that there is a “critical period’ for parents to bond to their babies. Supporters of this position state that parents who are separated from their newborns after birth will have difficulty forming that essential parent-infant bond. Citing studies conducted with animals, they point out that mother mice will often refuse to care for their young if they are separated right after birth. Fortunately, humans are not mice, and more recent research suggests that human mothers generally quite able to go on to be good mothers even if they have to be separated from their babies as a result of prematurity, illness, or other reasons.

Nonetheless, positive changes have occurred because of recent recognition of the process of bonding. Many hospitals have dramatically humanized the way in which parents and babies are treated… Parents are allowed greater contact with babies, particularly in intensive care nurseries. There, parents can now often participate in the feeding, handling, and general care of their babies right away, instead of waiting until their infants are released from the hospital.

Importance of the Personal Statement

The process of applying to college or university differs in different countries. In the US, collage applications are as important as the SAT score. In the UK, it is important to write a strong personal statement in order to have a chance at your chosen college or university. For Hong Kong students who apply to colleges and universities all over the world, the process of college applications is a very important one.

As much has already been written about the US common applications and SATs, focus here will be given to the personal statement which is needed for the UK UCAS process.

Many students want to put as much as possible into their personal statements. All of the reasons for choosing the course or field of study, all of the exam results, prizes, achievements and awards that have filled a school career, all of the voluntary service opportunities and extra-curricular activities, in order to give the university admissions officer a good sense of what sort of person is applying for the course. But this often produces a personal statement that exceeds the word limit by a long way. Students then feel indignant that they must cut and edit some of their precious personal account in order to fit in with the requirements.

A more sensible approach is to ascertain the word requirements before starting – 4000 characters including spaces. Although not generous in length, keeping within this limit while still giving the admissions officer a feel for the individual often produces concise and tightly written statements.

Students also need to know something about the expected structure of the personal statement. Generally there are five paragraphs, dealing with the reasons for choosing this course, followed by academic credentials and why this makes the student well suited to the course. Then work experience and voluntary service relevant to the field of study, extra curricular activities which have contributed to the development of the student and finally back to the course and what the student hopes to gain from it.

With this structure in mind, and with some thoughtful input from a person with experience of personal statements, students should successfully negotiate this right of passage and end up with the university offer they were hoping for.

Human Capital Management Analytics

Human Capital Management Analytics

Since the early days of the modern finance function, when barely comprehensible financial reports were sent to managers and then left largely unread, making management analysis relevant to non-finance professionals has been a major issue. The same is true of Human Capital Management analytics – data needs to be relevant and presented in a context that line managers can readily understand.

Working out what data should be sent is a two-way process that requires fairly ruthless management. It’s important to encourage feedback from across the organisation, but choice needs to be limited to keep the process manageable – asking users what kind of reports they’d like can easily lead to unwieldy wish lists. Building a business case for analytics adoption in part rests on replacing today’s ad hoc reporting (where it occurs) with more efficient, less resource-hungry alternatives. Ultimately, HR managers will be treading a delicate line between distributing data according to generalised role definitions and providing tailored information.

Information dissemination has become far easier with the emergence of corporate intranets and more recently, employee portals. As the portal evolves into the daily focal point for individuals – the place where they log on to software applications and access their own choice of internal and external information feeds – it becomes the logical place to present analytical data relevant to their roles. By doing so, analytics come to be seen as a core part of day-to-day operations, not a separate activity – and the more that analytical data is woven into operations the better.

This approach has long been prevalent in call centres, where real-time data on call response activity is presented in graphical format to employees as an incentive to improve team performance. In the people management field, some organisations are taking similar steps for absence management, presenting employees with up-to-date information on how much holiday they’ve taken and how many days they’ve been off sick. In some cases, the value is less in the information than in the broader message: if employees know sickness is being monitored closely, they’re less likely to abuse the system.

At a management level, dashboards are becoming an increasingly common fixture, providing everyone from board-level directors to line managers with up-to-date, graphical information on the key metrics that interest them, along with the ability to click on summary findings and drill down for more detailed information. Again, what sets these tools apart is partly the quality of the user interface, and partly the relevance. It must be made easy for managers to configure their own dashboard so that it displays the information they need, from real-time operational data to longer-term trends.

Finally, while the software framework is a significant component of the analytical framework, organisations also need to foster a learning culture, where performance analysis is carried out to enhance overall capability, not merely as a means of appraising or rewarding individuals. This requires a shift in culture away from a blame mentality towards an environment where poor results – or mistakes – are seen as the basis for learning and moving forward. For some organisations, making this mindset shift may be as big a challenge as introducing the analytical tools and processes that support it.
